Food Service - Cook/ Baker

Salary: $16.50 an hour
Non-Exempt: No
Part-time: Yes
Supervisor’s Title: Kitchen Manager
Location: Aurora
Hours: 3-4 hours daily
Start date: As soon as possible for remainder of school year and some summer days **no evenings or weekend hours**

Summary: The Cook/ Baker should encompass a strong cooking and line cooking background as well as admin; be passionate about working in kitchens that make from scratch meals that operate with the National School Lunch Program. This position will mainly prepare breakfast and lunch items on the menu provided by CEC Nutrition Services and works directly with the Kitchen Manager but being able to assist in all areas and cross train is very important.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.    
  • Coordinate the daily activities of the kitchen, including planning the menu for the day, assigning duties for each employee, ensuring food prep and cooking are completed each day and planning weekly orders
  • Primary person prepping cooking standardized scratch recipes for students and staff on-site
  • Some baking will be required
  • Utilize the computer to perform daily and weekly functions
  • Implement proper sanitation and kitchen safety programs as defined by federal, state and local guidelines and rules including the Nutrition Services HACCP program
  • Train Nutrition Services Assistants on menus, proportions, requirements on menus, sanitation, safety, instruction on equipment, customer service and computer system
  • Assist the Kitchen Manager in ordering food supplies for required menu and various outside vendors, while maintaining and monitoring inventory
  • Assist lead cook in all areas and ability to cross train in all areas
  • Other tasks as assigned
Education and Experience:   
  • High School or GED Certificate preferred
  • 1-2 years of experience in cooking, expanding recipes, customer service and sanitation. School food service experience preferred
  • Must have strong math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions
  • Ability to maintain accurate records/reports
  • Ability to relate well to students and staff
  • Attendance and punctuality are important

Job Qualifications:
  • Demonstrates good written and verbal communication skills.  Ability to follow instructions, both verbally and written
  • Computer experience with Outlook, Work, and Excel preferred
  • Must understand the fundamentals of culinary operation, including operating knowledge of kitchen equipment, within one month of hire
  • Possess the basic ability to understand documents, define problems and draw valid conclusions.
  • Must be able to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment, where teamwork is essential.
  • Must be able to cook from scratch.  Baking experience would be a plus.
  • Applicants must preferably be proficient in the English language with the ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.

Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations:  
  • Serving it Safe certification is required to be completed within the first year of hire
  • Must attend mandatory in-service trainings and classes
  • Upon a conditional offer of employment, all employees must complete a background check and confidential medical inquiry and examination. Final offer of employment is conditional on the results of both the background check and passing the medical examination. The medical exams shall be conducted in order to ensure that candidates are physically able to perform the essential functions of the desired positions with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license or reliable mode of transportation

  • Moderate physical effort (must be able to lift up to 45 pounds)
