The Douglas County Public Works Operations Department has 5 openings foran Equipment Operator to join our team. This position is responsible for operating and maintaining County vehicles, road construction and maintenance, plowing snow, and performing manual labor activities.

Examples of Duties
(The following examples are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive.)
Operates equipment including pickups, single axle and tandem axle trucks, all types of tractor-trailers, rollers, water tankers, mowers, sweepers, loaders, backhoes, snowplows, sanders, motor graders, dozers, scrapers, paving equipment, volumetric mixer, mud jack pump, slip-form paving machine, and other construction and maintenance equipment.
Performs a variety of road maintenance tasks involving the operation of the equipment stated above and manual labor tasks, including placement of concrete, placement of asphalt, culvert cleaning, shoveling, raking, fence construction, tree trimming, etc.
Responds to emergency situations including, but not limited to: fires, flooding, and natural disasters.
Performs snow removal and application of anti-icing and de-icing products.
Performs daily inspection on equipment and vehicles used.
Performs miscellaneous minor maintenance work on vehicles and equipment.
Collects debris along County roads.
Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Generally a high school diploma or GED supplemented by one year education or experience in highway maintenance or equipment operation or any equivalent combination.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to read and comprehend instructions, safety rules and manuals, short correspondence, and memos and the ability to perform basic math.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions and deviate from those instructions if the conditions warrant.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Must possess valid State of Colorado Class "A" commercial driver's license.
Ability to obtain a tanker endorsement within six-months of hire.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Knowledge of road construction and maintenance tools and equipment.
Knowledge of safety factors.
Work outside normal work hours is required.
Applicants for this position must meet the Department of Transportation physical exam and drug and alcohol testing requirements.
The ability to successfully complete pre-employment screening including but not limited to: reference checks, criminal background, motor vehicle record check, physical and drug screen is required.
This position does not directly supervise other employees.
CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR:
Work involves equipment operation and physical labor.
Consequence of error may result in unsafe roadways and unsafe working conditions for co-workers and the traveling public.
This position has daily contact with co-workers and the public.
Work is often performed independently and requires self-initiative and good judgment.
Ability to perform continuous strenuous physical labor for up to 10 hours a day. (may exceed 12 hours during times of snow removal or construction or emergency situations.)
Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds frequently.
Work is generally performed outdoors and is subject to adverse weather conditions.
In the event of an emergency/disaster in or near the County, all County employees are expected to make every effort to be available to assist the County Manager, Elected/Appointed Officials and Department Directors to ensure the continued operation of any and all necessary County functions. This may mean being available to perform additional duties and hours beyond what is normally required. In the event that an exempt employee does work more than 40 hours a week in support of County operations during an emergency, such employee may receive overtime or other appropriate wage compensation in accordance with existing County policies or at the discretion of the County.
