Federal grant to improve transportation needs of older adults, including adults with disabilities, in Douglas County
Five organizations specializing in serving the County’s growing senior population, as well as adults with disabilities, with quality reliable transportation services, will have funding to do so thanks to a $494,000 grant from the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the Federal Transit Administration.
The grant, received by Douglas County, will fund door-to-door, demand-response transportation services from Jan. 1, 2020 through Dec. 31, 2020. All Douglas County seniors and adults with disabilities regardless of geographic location, are eligible to receive transportation services from this grant through a Douglas County administered program.
Consistent with the Board of Douglas County Commissioners’ priority to provide safe and accessible transportation countywide, these grant-supported services will promote self-sufficiency by providing access to vital resources including medical care, employment, and recreation, thus contributing to the individual’s quality of life.
The Board of County Commissioners approved the grant agreement at the Dec. 17, 2019 Business Meeting. Commissioner Lora Thomas commented, “This program helps seniors stay in their homes where we know they have a better quality of life —access to transportation gives residents a sense of freedom that can make all the difference.”
CDOT distributes these funds as part of the Federal Transit Administration Mobility Management Grant which aims to improve mobility for seniors and individuals with disabilities by removing barriers to transportation service and expanding transportation mobility options.
